Challenge is the operative word – that beautiful owl artifact may take a while

I am utterly in love with the owl artifact skin for Resto druid, which comes from the new solo challenge but after the last 3 days, I have a feeling it’s going to take me a while to get.

I read lots of comments that people are finding the challenge difficult and that you should be at least 900ilvl before you go there, but I was quietly confident stepping in. After all I’m 905 and regularly heal high mythic pluses.. this should be fine right… WRONG. I got my healing butt handed to me in less than a few seconds into the scenario, so I slunk off to read the Druid discord for some tips and slightly “better” prepared I went back.

Stocked up with flasks, food, potions of prolonged power, runes and drums of fury to give a lust and with a whole set of new talents specced into, (that I never use in either a dgn or raid scenario but which were apparently better) I set to work.

The resto druid one is set in Blackrook hold and gives you NPCS from Val’sharah as companions. You get Jarod Shadowsong as a tank, Callie as a Rogue and Granny as a hunter.

Phase 1.

Wave 1 – Archer. He throws out a mana draining arrow so I kept Jarod between me and him (he likes to teleport too) and yay.. I didn’t get hit and had mana. There’s enough down time here to wrath away at the archer from the safety of behind Jarod.

Wave 2 – Mage and Archer – that mage hurts and it’s recommended you interrupt him when he gets 3 stacks of his buff (it increases his damage), so while dancing behind Jarod for the archer I typhooned him at 3 and worked on helping to dps him down as typhoon’s on a 1min cd so it’s only good for one interrupt.

Wave 3 – Mage and 1 Stabby type. Interrupt the mage as before and watch out for the fixate from the stabby type. Slow him, run away from him or heal through the damage.

Wave 4 – Mage and 2 Stabby types – Stack on the mage and then the stabby types run to you. Interrupt all 3 with typhoon and then hope my npcs kill the mage because I’m now busy in bear form being fixated by the stabby types. At least with them fixated on me they’re not hitting my npcs so I can go into bear form and take their hits, or blink away and keep them slowed with ursols vortex and then pop out and heal the npcs as they need.

Wave 5 – Mage, Archer and 1 Stabby type. This,  according to the discord, is the worst pull in the entire scenario.. pop potion of prolonged power, lust and pop tree form and… DIE, and die and die. If it’s not me, it’s one of the npcs. I simply could not get past this wave. On my very last attempt I did get it down to only 1 enemy alive of the 3 so I can see progress but urgh.. This is going to take a while.

The Good

It’s fun if slightly frustrating. It does help me to think outside the box in taking talents and needing to really use my toolbox and actually I can see a slight benefit to it helping me out ‘real’ world.. I was healing a cathedral dgn last night and the tank and 1 dps died on the 4th boss (it was a bad dgn, I was 3rd highest dps as healer, so it wasn’t looking promising) and the boss agrro’d me.. which immediately made me think of the challenge and the stabby types so I dropped into bear form and with a combination of frenzied regen, thrash and blink/heal I kept his attention long enough for him to die.

So thanks challenge mode, you owe that honour.

The Bad

There’s tons of jokes going around:

But you know what, it’s meant to be challenging content – on par with a higher mythic? Well in higher mythics, the dps don’t do that shit. They interrupt, they cc, they use defensives. I’d like to see some changes that put the onus on passing the challenge more onto your skills as a healer and less as a jack of all trades. I’m in there with a rogue and a hunter npc. That freaking rogue should be kicking the boss, that hunter should be slowing the mobs that are fixating me.

Put abilities in there such as mechanics that’s going to oneshot the tank if I don’t get an external defensive onto him in time, or some slow ticking dots that will whittle away my dps’ health if I don’t keep heals on them, or some mechanic that goes on me that I have to take a certain range away or I’ll wipe the scenario.

That would be more enjoyable as a healer challenger than having to juggle interrupts with limited tools, and dividing my time between choosing do I slow the mob, blink away from the mob or actually heal that tank getting his face beat on, etc.

The Annoying

This is going to be gated by the enthusiasm of my fellow wow players as to how many resources they pour into getting the mage tower up and running. I can see this needing to be something that needs to get completed sooner rather than later in case ppl stop being interested in the gathering up the resources to keep the mage tower being constructed.

For the love of all things holy, get rid of the 100 shard requirement to enter after your first wipe of the day. I’m spending enough time and effort gathering up the resources (food, flasks, drums ) and I’m spending a ridiculous amount of time in there as it is. I’m pretty sure once I get past the learning curve of P1, then P4-P5 is going to take just as many wipes and a P5 wipe is going to mean a really long time re-clearing the previous phases.  I don’t really need it gated behind time, requirement of a specific tower to be up AND farming a specific currency.

This appearance is going to be something I really am going to enjoy having knowing just how much it pushed me to get. That is of course, assuming I can complete the challenge. It does annoy me to no end that there are plenty of other restoration druids out there that have got it already because it certainly makes me question my healing skills if I can’t past this.

The mage tower is down as of today until we can get it re-built so I’ll be farming up a lot of shards in this down time so it goes back up as fast as possible and I have lots left over for attempts.
